Prodrive, the British engineering consultancy founded by David Richards, has just made its first car. Prodrive builds lots of cars, including the official Subarus for the World Rally Championship and the Aston Martin DBR9 racers. But the P2 is different because it is Prodrive’s own road car, produced to demonstrate the breadth of the company;s abilities.

A glance at the P2’s specification suggests that it is no more than a re-bodied Subaru Impreza WRX, for its uses the flat four turbo engine, six speed manual gearbox and four wheel layout with which Prodrive is so familiar. But reality is rather different. The centre section is floor, roof, front bulkhead, door frames also started out at Subaru. Prodrive cut 12cm from the waistline of the R1’s steel bodyshell to turn an upright four seat mini into a low line two seat coupe. Overall weight of the prototype is around 1,100kg which with 350bhp and should translate into 0-100kmph acceleration in less than 4 seconds and a maximum speed of 280kmph.
