General Motors with its GMC PAD, which is a futuristic, diesle electric powered urban apartment with mobility, recently won the Design challenge. The theme of this years competition was ” An LA Adventure” and ten automotive design teams from all around the world accepted the challenge to create something new for dealing with the urban jungle. A 25-foot motor home weights about 10,000 lbs and uses a 300-horsepower engine. Space-age materials such as composites may reduce the weight, but the weight of the communications equipment could compensate for that savings.

New high-end motor homes can cost in the range of $800,000 to $1 million, and models that are more modest can still reach $250,000. The GMC PAD features a Diesel-Electric hybrid system, which acts as a generator for the onboard power grid as well as propulsion for DriveMode. With the PAD’s resource management technology, onboard fuel & water supplies would last for weeks or even months on end.
