Nano technology “molecular condom”

“The first step in the complicated process of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection in a woman is the virus diffusing from semen to vaginal tissue. We want to stop that first step,” says Patrick Kiser, an associate professor of bioengineering at the University of Utah’s College of Engineering. “We have created the first vaginal gel designed to prevent movement of the AIDS virus. This is unique. There’s nothing like it.”

“We did it to develop technologies that can enable women to protect themselves against HIV without approval of their partner,” he adds. “This is important – particularly in resource-poor areas of the world like sub-Sahara Africa and south Asia where, in some age groups, as many as 60 percent of women already are infected with HIV. In these places, women often are not empowered to force their partners to wear a condom.”

A study testing the behavior of the new gel and showing how it traps AIDS-causing HIV particles will be published online later this week in the journal Advanced Functional Materials. Kiser is the senior author.

“Due to cultural and socioeconomic factors, women often are unable to negotiate the use of protection with their partner,” says Julie Jay, the study’s first author and a University of Utah doctoral candidate in pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry.

most popular way of protecting data.

Backing up data to a remote disk or tape using a backup software, is the most popular way of protecting data. Unfortunately, data modified since the last backup is at risk of getting lost if there ever was a hardware failure. To reduce the chances of failure, some people use a second hard drive to store a mirror copy of the data. If there was a failure on the first hard drive, the second one could automatically take over.
This method of reducing risk of data loss is also known as RAID (redundant array of inexpensive disks). To see if your computer supports RAID, check your BIOS settings during boot up. Due to the drop in storage costs, there are a lot of service providers on the Internet who can backup your data over the Internet relatively cheaply. This is also an excellent way to backup data from your laptop.

Shelby GT500 in action

The Ford Shelby GT500 returns in the upgraded Mustang shell, with more power and refinement. It comes in coupe and convertible trims.Worked on by Ford’s SVT team, the 2010 Shelby GT500 is powered by a supercharged and intercooled 5.4L V8 engine estimated at 540 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, redlining is 6250 rpm. The aluminum “power dome” hood has holes in it to help cool the engine, and hides a conical air filter for the cold-air intake, which necessitated moving the Cobra snake badge to the other side of the grille for 2010, to maximize airflow. The Shelby’s distinct supercharger sounds has been reduced, with a resonator between the air filter and engine throttle body. The transmission is a 6-speed manual, with a new final drive ratio changed from 3.31 to 3.55 for better acceleration. The twin-disc clutch on the transmission has been upgraded to improve drivability. The discs on the 2010 Shelby GT500 are larger, and made of copper and fiberglass for strength. The suspension system remains independent at the front and live-axle at the rear. Brakes, suspension and steering have also been improved. However, all the improvements have pushed its weight to as high as 3900 lbs.

Mercedes S400, SLR722 and C250CDI

The S400Blue hybrid is Mercedes offering for the green headed. The limo uses a lithium ion battery a 20bhp engine and a petrol motor. Mated to a seven speed gearbox, the car is capable of a genius 250km/h with impressive fuel efficiency and emission figures.
The 650bhp SLR722 roadster should have been a hit, but it wasn’t given much importance by the visitors, as the Fascination concept hogged all the limelight. Even the smart for two electric seemed to interest more people than the roadster supercar.
The new C250CDI at the Mercedes stand makes a lot of sense for India. The 2.2 litre twin turbo diesel employed on the car develops close to 205bhp and 500Nm. It’s capable of a 0-100km/h sprint in about 7sec and a genuine top whack of 250km/h. Not only that the new engine also boasts impressive fuel efficiency and CO2 emission figures. The new car could just be the right tool to rein in the BMW juggernaut in India. Expect the engine to be featured in the next gen E-class as well.

Ford Fiesta Econetic and KA

For the green brigade, Ford had the Econetic version of the Fiesta. A tweaked 1.6 TDCi engine ensures lower CO2 emissions and more efficiency. Enthusiasts won’t be seen anywhere close to the car though. The new Ka is the successor to Britain’s largest selling ultra small car, shares its base with the Fiat 500/ Panda and is built in the same factory situated in Poland. Young, vibrant and jazzy to look at, the old Ka was one of the most distinctive things around, but in the latest avatar, it’s lost a bit of its visual character. Expect the new car to retain its sharp handling traits to keep it as alive as it ever was. Under the bonnet you will find FIAT sourced 1.2 petrol and 1.3 diesel powerplants. While the engines are the same as the ones found on the 500, Ford has fine tuned the suspension and other bits to make sure the car feels more lively and fun than its Italian counterpart.

flexible electronic screen to be launched

mnunioni

World’s first flexible electronic screen is set to be launched by a Cambridge-based company.
Scientists at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory have come up with the roll up A4-sized “intelligent plastic” display, which took a decade of development. But Plastic Logic, the company behind the e-version imagery, said that it would not produce a roll-up screen, made from a microchip of cheap plastic.
“People worry that it will break if they roll up a device and dump it in their bag,” Times Online quoted Martin Jackson, the vice-president of technology, as saying.
The Plastic Logic, created to compete with the growing variety of electronic books from companies like Sony and the US-only Amazon Kindle, will see a US launch at the beginning of next year at a predicted price of around 300 dollars.
A British launch may be seen in late 2010 or early 2011.

Google Chrome Operating System…

A few weeks ago Google set the world aflutter by announcing that it was developing its own operating system for PCs. Here’s what you need to know about the Google Chrome Operating System…
Chrome will be a free, open source, lightweight, quick-booting, web-browser based operating system for PCs. Initially, it will focus on ultra mobile computers like netbooks based on low-powered Atom and ARM processors. Boot times of a few seconds, designed to run much faster than contemporary netbooks, and a crop of low-horsepower consuming web-based applications, is what Google is promising with this Linux based OS. All applications will run inside the Google Chrome web browser.
While acknowledging certain overlaps with Android (Google’s OS for small devices like phones and set-top boxes), the company insists that Chrome is a totally separate initiative.
When can you expect it?
The code for the OS should be released under an open source license by the end of this year. Chrome should be available on netbooks and low-end notebooks in the second half of 2010. This will be followed by a version for desktop PCs.
How could you benefit?
Since the OS is going to be free, analysts anticipate the prices of netbooks pre-loaded with Chrome to drop by about 8-10 per cent. As Chrome is being designed ground-up to be less of a resource hog and more energy efficient than Win-dows Vista or even Windows 7, it promises not only to run applications much faster but also make your battery juice last much longer.
How will one manage when one is not online?
Though details have yet to be announced officially, you will be able to run tools and services like Google Docs, Gmail, Picasa etc. offline as well via Google Gears (http://gears. google.com/). In fact, you can already do all this using Gears with your current Mac or Windows PC.
The backers
The world’s favourite search engine maker is not alone in its OS development efforts. Apart from PC giant, Hewlett Packard, lending support are industry majors like Acer, Toshiba, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Adobe.

Apache Engines & performance

The Apache is the quickest bike in this test. By just a fraction, mind, but quickest nevertheless. There’s nothing in it as far as top speeds go, both the Apache and Pulsar clocking 112kmph while the Unicorn clocks 110.8kmph and the Achiever maxes out at 108.1kmph. While the Apache is the quickest, it’s the Achiever that has the strongest motor in this test. In the roll on tests the Achiever takes the least time in third, fourth and fifth gears to get to 70kmph from 30 and rated as Achiever’s motor as the most refined in this test. The fact that the Achiever makes 0.1PS of power and 0.5Nm of torque more than the Unicorn. Honda engines, displacing 149.1cc, makes their power is a lesson to both Bajaj and TVS. Even at peak revs the motors retain composure and at cruising speeds it’s a factor of the relatively taller gearing that sees her pull lesser revs at 80kmph that makes the Unicorn more sedate at speed.
